We did not tour Ohio much, we had planned to visit a dear friend of ours who lives in Wellington, but she had unfortunately gone away to visit her sister in Kentucky, so we missed her. As a result of this we decided to go through Ohio as quickly as possible. 3
One
thing I remember vividly about Cleveland was the very bad roads, we lost both our front stainless steel wheel trim in the massive
potholes on the main highway through Cleveland.
An interesting town we did visit was Vermilion the write-up about it described it as
a nautical town, this sounded interesting as it is on Lake Erie. A very pretty little town and steeped in nautical history. We went
to the museum ($5 each) and it was very interesting. Also walked though the village and to the marina, some really big boats and lovely
waterfront houses. Well worth the detour.
The downtown area of Vermilion resembled a movie set, it was so perfectly "little-town" America.
Vermilion
is situated on a natural bay and inlet from Lake Erie, situated on the coastal road from Cleveland through Vermilion, onto Sandusky
and then eventually Toledo. From there we stayed on the 6 road, which travels along the lake coast - very pretty drive.
From Vermilion
we then headed for a town called Archbold where there is the Sauder Farm & craft village, it was mildly interesting. We turned
off the coastal road about 20 miles past Sandusky and then headed for Chicago, via Elkhart, Gary and the Indiana Dunes State Park
(see Indiana).
One of the truck companies that really interested us was England. Their trucks are bright red, always, and I mean always,
in immaculate condition. Often we stayed in Truck stops and rest areas with England trucks and their drivers always cleaned their
trucks the moment they stopped. In this photo, Yvonne is standing alongside the typically clean, gleaming England truck. This was
in Ohio, somewhere.
