New Mexico was a new experience for us in 1999, we had never been to this state before. There isn't much to write about the part of New Mexico we saw.
The points about NM we remember are obviously the desert and very arid landscape.
There are millions of Cactuses (or is it Cacti), either side of the highway and in the median as well. Each one, if you used your imagination looked like a human stick figure. The highway is flat, long and uninteresting. We stopped at a visitor centre and there we did see brochures for places in Northern New Mexico that looked very interesting, but we did not have the time to visit them, maybe later.
Because the I10 road
is good and has no sharp corners or difficult stretches, I managed to convince Yvonne to drive our motorhome, or rig, as I called
it. I call it a rig as when the car was in tow, we were well over 50' long. She drove for a few hours but did not like the effect
caused by large trucks passing, but it was a good experience for her.
We stopped at the visitor centre which overlooks one of the largest
towns in NM - Las Cruces. It resembled a fort built entirely from the local rocks. From this vantage point we had a good view of the
town and the surrounding area.
