Excerpt from my travel log) - Memorial Day in the USA 1997, and we were on our way to Georgia. A very pretty drive through some really pretty farmlands. We travelled along the 41 through Lake City then onto the I10 then onto the 301N, a wrong turn at Callahan took us more NW than we wanted so at Folkston we turned right onto the 40E and headed for Jekyll Island. We arrived at Jekyll Island later that afternoon and checked into our campsite. After a walk to the pier, we drove to the historic ‘old town’ area, parked at the information centre and walked around amongst the old houses of the rich and famous. Amongst these were the Rockefeller’s, Vanderbilt’s and the Goodyear’s summer cottages. Most have been reconditioned and are in pristine condition and are very pretty.
That afternoon we had a
bad storm, a F3 tornado struck Jacksonville, just south of Jekyll Island, but in Texas 6 tornadoes struck a town called Jarrell, 29
people were killed and another 15 or so missing. Watched the footage on TV, it was quite frightening.
From Jekyll Island we went to
Brunswick, which was not too far away. We bought 2 mountain bikes from the local Wal-Mart, over the next few months we rode these
bikes literally hundreds of miles. After having lunch in the Wal-Mart car park, I spray painted the bumper where the bicycle bracket
had been modified, and also changed the wiper blade - after this we made our way to Savannah.
Savannah is an extremely pretty city,
with very definite English architecture. We would have loved to spend more time there.
