We left  Utrecht on 20 July 1984, headed for Rotterdam. In Rotterdam we caught a "bullet" train to Gare du Nord in Paris.
The train trip was great, we sped along at 200 kph plus, without the usual noises from the train or the joins in the track. What a great way to travel, especially in 1st class.
After travelling through Antwerpen and Brussels we arrived in Paris at 14:00.
An eventful taxi ride got us to Hotel Burgundy, a 4-star hotel in Rue Duphot, near Place de la Concorde, which must be the most hectic roundabout anywhere in the world.
We visited all the usual tourist attractions, including the Eiffel Tower, Arc du Triomphe, Champs-Elysees and Sacre-Couer and Montmarte.
A coach tour to Palace of Versailles was a highlight of out trip to Paris, not the coach trip, but the Palace. What opulence, no wonder the revolution took hold so quickly.
On 22 July we watched the end of Tour de France cycle race, as the cyclists road down the Champs-Elysses.
The next day we went to the Hoverspeed terminal and caught a bus to Calais. We met Joan Wells on this bus, she was from Ohio and we wrote to each other for over 20 years. Unfortunately when we drove through Ohio in 1997, she was visiting relatives elsewhere so we missed meeting her again.
The hovercraft trip lasted only 35 minutes and we landed at Dover.
